Rajarshi Chakrabarti (Raj) is a Senior Partner at Kochhar & Co. and heads the Firm’s Mumbai office.

His practice focuses on corporate commercial transactions, with particular emphasis on regulatory compliance and risk mitigation. Raj brings close to 3 decades of experience to his work, encompassing mergers & acquisitions (inbound and outbound), joint ventures, technical collaborations, and business and asset restructuring. He regularly advises large foreign corporations, including Fortune Global 500 companies, on the full spectrum of issues concerning their Indian operations, across sectors such as financial services, private equity and venture capital, engineering, retail, biotechnology, telecom, e-commerce, IT, and ITES.

Raj’s expertise also includes managing complex litigations and negotiations relating to shareholder disputes, large contractual claims, and proceedings instituted by regulatory agencies. He has significant expertise in liaison and advocacy with regulatory and law enforcement authorities, and regularly advises clients on employment law, ethics and policy, and matters pertaining to white-collar crimes.

Prior to joining the Firm, Raj served as corporate in-house counsel and was part of the legal leadership teams of one of India’s largest private telecom companies as well as the country’s biggest media and entertainment group. In those roles, he played an instrumental part in advising senior management on high-stakes and complex matters, including business restructuring, corporate governance, and regulatory risk and mitigation.

Raj is a frequent speaker on diverse Indian law issues and has addressed audiences on topics including Mergers & Acquisitions in India, Doing Business in India, Enforcement of IPR, and the Indian Judicial System. He has also conducted workshops for corporates both in India and overseas.

• Represented Finicity Corp. in its acquisition by MasterCard for a total consideration of US$ 825 million.
• Represented Aon Plc in its proposed merger with WTW, the deal was valued at US$ 30 billion.
• Advised a listed Indian entity in its acquisition of a business through slump sale from an Indian firm.
• Represented Volex Plc in its 51% acquisition of an Indian company for a consideration of US$ 13 million.
• Assisted a leading Indian private insurance company in arriving at a settlement with a Government entity in relation to certain payment disputes.
• Advised the subsidiaries of a French company in restructuring their business operations in India.
• Advised a global IT sector major in its dispute with an Indian regulatory authority regarding seizure of goods, initiation of prosecution etc.
• Represented one of the largest global media investment companies in number of high-stake transactions with key channel partners, production houses, content owners.
• Advised number of leading Indian companies on white-collar crime and complex employee issues.
