Foreign Direct Investment from all of India's neighboring countries will now be the through the government route. Foreign Exchange Management (Non-debt Instruments) Rules, 2019 have been amended to the effect that investments into Indian companies from all the neighboring countries, including China, will now require a nod from the government. This step has been taken discourage opportunistic investment in Indian companies by all the neighboring countries amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Similar FDI restrictions were earlier placed on Pakistan and Bangladesh.
